Traditional Chinese Medicine for Fatty Liver has Scientific Backing

Our Liver

The liver is the largest solid organ in the body. It weighs about 1.6 kilograms and measures about 20 cm horizontally and 17 cm vertically and is about 12 cm thick.

The functions of the liver are:

  • It manufactures proteins
  • It synthesizes, stores and metabolizes fats
  • It metabolizes and stores carbohydrates
  • It produces and secretes bile
  • It eliminates the potentially harmful biochemical products produced by the body
  • It detoxifies and removes drugs, alcohol and environmental toxins

Fatty Liver

NAFLD (Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease) refers to a wide range of liver disease, from simple fatty liver (steatosis), to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis when the liver exhibits slight inflammation (NASH), to cirrhosis (scarring of the liver). All exhibit similar symptoms: the accumulation of fat in the liver cells (hepatocytes). Other causes of fatty liver are alcohol, viral, accumulation of copper or iron, drugs like prednisone and hereditary.

A healthy liver is very red in color. It has a soft uniform texture. If we magnify the liver many millions of times and slice it to look inside, we will see it is full of spaces that are red-pink in color. This is because they are full of blood. When the blood flows through these spaces, the cells remove dead cells, micro-organisms, toxins and fat from our blood stream. It is a filter and cleanser machine. If fats accumulate in the liver then it would not be able to do its work efficiently. When that happens, the blood stream would become overloaded with toxins and fat. If left uncheck and is allowed to reach an advance stage, it would lead to a series of problems.

Symptoms of a dysfunction liver e.g. fatty liver:

  • Loss of appetite

  • Weight loss

  • Lethargy

  • Fatigue

  • Loss of interest in sex

  • Poor health

  • Prone to anger

  • Immunity problem like itchy skin

  • Mental problem like forgetfulness or problem in concentration

  • Yellow perspiration

When forgetfulness sets in (unable to remember or recollect) then usually the sufferer would suffer from yellow perspiration as well.

Causes of Liver Dysfunction e.g. Fatty Liver:

  • Excessive alcohol

  • Excessive barbequed food

  • Excessive deep fried food

  • Meat from animals fed with growth hormones and drugs

  • Drugs like cholesterol lowering drugs, prednisone

  • Other toxic food e.g. food containing toxic metal

  • Viral

  • Prone to excessive anger

Deep frying vegetable oil like soybean oil produces a highly toxic compound called HNE (4-hydroxy-trans-2-nonenal) in the oil. This oil is easily absorbed in the food. Research shows that American on average eat 4 serving of chips in a week. TCM herbalism knew long ago, before allopathic people "discover" this truth that regularly consuming deep fried food can cause liver problems. Try eating fast food 3 meals a day for one month and see what happens to the liver.

The liver starts to show signs of dysfunction when it initially starts to accumulate a type of fat (simple fatty liver stage) called triglyceride as opposed to normal liver fat called adipocytes. When the accumulation leads to inflammation, it can begin to destroy the liver cells. When the disease reaches a very advanced stage it can lead to death. When the liver starts to accumulate fats it is a sign that something is going wrong. If the initial problem/s that is/are causing the dysfunction is arrested then it would not develop to the next stage. If this dysfunction is yet to be treated and the body develops another dysfunction like damage pancreas (caused by the drug that was trying to treat the liver problem) then the liver would have to do extra work. This “second hit” would accelerate the liver to progress to a cirrhosis stage. That is why drugs are so dangerous because before it can sort out the first problem, it create another somewhere else.

Treatment for Fatty Liver

There is no allopathic drug that can treat fatty liver. Treatment involves mainly concentrating on reducing the effects of “second hit”:

  • Diabetes control

  • Cholesterol control

These are indirect approaches and not effective in treating the problem as allopathic drugs are not known to be effective in treating diseases like diabetes and cholesterol. These drugs are only symptomatic in nature. They use a technique called masking. To control diabetic problem, they flood the body with more insulin. This literally drowns the body with insulin leading to more damage. To control cholesterol they use beta-blockers i.e. stopping the body from producing cholesterol. This includes the good cholesterol which the body needs. This is not treatment. It is called more destruction.

The best and safest method to treat fatty liver problem is to use holistic products that have been used by hundreds of millions of people stretching over the centuries to effectively treat the problem. Herbs like Herba Lysimachia Christinae, Radix Scutellaria Baicalensis Radix Bupleurum Scorzonerifolium, Folium Artemisa Scoparia ad Glychrrhiza Glabra have scientifically been proven to treat fatty liver problems.

Radix Scutellaria Baicalensis:

1) Clinical studies by western scientists have shown that Scutellaria baicalensis has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer (anti-liver cirrhosis) properties. Research showed Scutellaria baicalensis selectively and effectively inhibits cancer cell growth in vitro and in vivo and can be an effective chemotherapeutic agent for HNSCC. 4037-4043

2) Clinical studies by western scientists have proven that Scutellaria baicalensis can be used to induce liver regeneration. Research showed that Scutellaria baicalensis stimulated the proliferation of cultured hepatocytes. 444-455

3) Clinical studies by western scientists have shown that Scutellaria baicalensis has strong anti-oxidant (anti-cancer) properties. Research showed that most of the anticancer activities of Scutellaria baicalensis can be recapitulated with four purified constituents that function in part through inhibition of the androgen receptor signaling pathway. 3905-3914

4) Clinical research by western scientists have shown that Scutellaria baicalensis have anti-inflammatory functions, high scavenging activity and protects liver and red blood cells from lipid peroxidation. 60151

5) Clinical studies by western scientists have shown that saikosaponin-a, -d, baicalin from  Scutellaria baicalensis are potent antitumor components.  86(1):91-5

6) Clinical research by western scientists have shown that Scutellaria baicalensis' components, baicalein, baicalin, and wogonin, may become an attractive and promising treatment for bladder cancer because of its strong antioxidant effect. 951-5

Radix Bupleurum Scorzonerifolium:

1) Clinical studies by western scientists have shown that this herb improves cell function. 111-8

2) Clinical studies by western scientists have shown that two lignans, isochaihulactone and chaihunaphthone, from Bupleurum scrozonerifolium has  immunosuppressive functions.  1375-9

3) Clinical studies by western scientists have shown that this herb protects and improves liver function. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic, anti-oxidant activity and enhanced the liver cell regeneration. 442-8

4) Clinical studies by western scientists have shown that Bupleurum scrozonerifolium has strong antioxidative and in vitro hepatoprotective activity. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant activity and enhanced the liver cell regeneration. Research showed that the roots of  Bupleurum scrozonerifolium can be used to treat liver diseases. 1003-8

5) Clinical studies by western scientists have shown that saikosaponins, the main active constituents of Bupleurum spp., possess immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective, anti-tumor and anti-viral activities. 705-9

6) Clinical studies by western scientists have shown that Bupleurum scrozonerifolium has strong anti-oxidant (anti-cancer) properties. 183-93

Artemisia Scoparia:

1) Another group of scientists wrote "these data indicate that the plant Artemisia Scoparia is hepatoprotective and validate the folkloric use of this plant in liver damage". Research showed the protective action of the plant extract against CCl4-induced liver damage.  41001

2) Clinical studies by western scientists have shown that Artemisia Scoparia has strong anti-inflammatory function. Research demonstrate that the inhibition of scoparone on LPS-induced TF expression in HUVECs may mediate by the mechanisms suppressing superoxide anion formation and TF transcription. 72379

3) Clinical studies by western scientists have shown that Artemisia Scoparia has strong hepatoprotective function against alcohol-induced hepatotoxicity. 75739

4) Clinical studies by western scientists have shown that Artemisia Scoparia  has strong hepatoprotective function against drug-induced (Acetaminophen) hepatotoxicity.  12519

5) Clinical research by western scientists have shown that Artemisiae species were proven to have immunosuppressive principles. 41992

6) Clinical studies by western scientists have shown that the flavonoid rutin from Artemisia Scoparia  has strong hepatoprotective function against drug-induced (paracetamol) hepatotoxicity 90212

7) Clinical studies by western scientists have shown that Artemisia Scoparia  has strong hepatoprotective function against chemical-induced (carbon tetrachloride) hepatotoxicity. Research showed that Artemisia Scoparia inhibited fibrosis and lipid peroxidation induced by carbon tetrachloride. 33139

8) Clinical studies by western scientists have shown that Artemisia Scoparia  has strong antioxidative and cytoprotective actions. Clinical studies showed that the strong antioxidative functions of Artemisia Scoparia effectively protected liver tissues against the dimethylnitrosamine-induced hepatic fibrosis. 06248

9) Clinical studies by western scientists have shown that Artemisia Scoparia is effective for treating hepatitis (liver cirrhosis).  203-8

Glycyrrhiza Glabra:

1) Clinical research by western scientists from Hong Kong have shown that Glycyrrhiza glabra has strong anticarcinogenic capability. Glycyrrhiza glabra was able to inhibit the metabolic activation of hepato-toxin, a critical factor in the pathogenesis of chemical-induced carcinogenicity. 767692

2) Clinical research by western scientists have shown that Glycyrrhiza glabra has strong cell protective function from oxidative stresses. Research showed that dihydroxyfumarate-induced mitochondrial peroxidation was prevented by isoflavans from Glycyrrhiza glabra.  14953

3) Clinical research by western scientists have shown that glycyrrhizin from Glycyrrhiza glabra may prevent tissue injury caused by MAC not only in chronic hepatitis but in many autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. 92245

4) Clinical research by western scientists have shown that Glycyrrhiza glabra protects liver mitochondria against oxidative stresses. Research showed that  3'-Hydroxy-4'-O-methylglabridin (5) protected mitochondrial respiratory enzyme activities against NADPH-dependent peroxidation injury. 219-23

5) Clinical research by western scientists have shown that the decrease of elevated transaminase levels by glycyrrhizin is mediated in part by inhibition of immune-mediated cytotoxicity against hepatocytes (glycyrrhizin improves liver functions).  42643

6) Clinical research by western scientists have shown that (R)-4-(3,4-Dihydro-8,8-dimethyl)-2H,8H-benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b']dipyran-3yl)-1,3-benzenediol (glabridin), a flavonoid present in licorice extract,  has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory functions. This research showed that glabridin inhibits NO production and iNOS gene expression by blocking NF-B/Rel activation. 1187-1194

7) Clinical research by western scientists have shown that glycyrrhizin has inhibitory effects on immune-mediated cytotoxicity against hepatocytes and on nuclear factor (NF)-kappa B, which activates genes encoding inflammatory cytokines in the liver. 87634
